Michelle Hughes is a printmaker and designer. She creates linocut prints inspired by nature and the great British countryside. Much of her work depicts the Yorkshire landscape and Yorkshire coast, including the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors.
She is currently working on a new series of Lake District prints. Michelle enjoys walking and cycling to explore and capture the essence of a place, using photography to document her journeys and provide reference back in her York studio. Each design is created using the multi-block linocut method. The designs are hand-carved into lino blocks, one for each colour to be printed.
She uses oil-based inks and an etching press to handprint each of the editions. Michelle has a background in surface pattern design, homeware and fashion, which is evident in her use of colour and pattern. Her pared down palette and tonal use of colour, alongside simple stylised silhouettes, convey a style akin to vintage travel posters. She enjoys teaching workshops in her garden studio and courses online.
