Louise Davies

Louise’s work is about the landscape, capturing the time of day, the seasons, and her immediate response to her surroundings. She finds recording her first impression in a sketchbook invaluable for her studio work, these sketches providing a starting point for her work when she goes back to her London studio and refers to the sketches and then makes the plates.

Louise works intuitively and often uses her imagination and memory of the place. She works mainly in etching and in particular uses hard ground to get a deep etched line and aquatint to get strong tones on the zinc plate. Along with her interest in mark making, her work has a strong colour element in it. She often uses three etching plates and a collagraph which are layered on top of each other. By doing this, she can produce rich colours but also have a translucent element within them.

Louise spends a long time proofing the images: there can be 20 different proofs and finally (maybe after a couple of weeks) she will choose which she feels is the right one and then she is ready to edition.
